Christie's Visit
On Wednesday 11th October our Year 9 Harris Experience students visited Christie’s, the world's oldest fine art auctioneer, to learn about the company, its history, global standing and how it has conducted the greatest and most celebrated auctions through the centuries. Annually, Christie’s offers over 450 auctions in over 80 categories, including all areas of fine and decorative arts, jewellery, photographs, collectibles, wine and more.
Based on their own understanding and knowledge, students were initially asked to evaluate a variety of objects and were often shocked by the actual valuations. This exercise allowed them to better appreciate why the price art at auctions can vary from from £200 to over £100 million. They also had extremely interesting talks from experts from ceramics and fine art; the former, talked about Picasso’s collection of ceramics and what inspired him, namely animals and women and the latter, about the multitude of criteria considered when evaluating the price of a painting; memory, reason, & imagination are used as criteria for evaluating intelligence but also work well for judging art.
In July 2018, students will have an opportunity to be an auctioneer and demonstrate their numerical, communication and commercial skills and of course, their intelligence!
