Drama Projects and Highlights - From Shakespeare to Carol Churchill

Easy 1Year 11 recently went on a theatre visit to watch Easy (pictured), a powerful new play by Amy Blakelock exploring what happens when we combine social media, Love Island ideals, Snapchat and teenage insecurity. An intimate portrait of adolescence today, Easy asks us: “Why is it so hard to believe we’re good enough as we are?”.

“I really enjoyed watching this play because of the way it was performed,” said Jannyce, Year 11. “It was a one-person play and the actor played more than one character and she was incredible. It made me understand that there does not need to be a big cast in order for a play to be mind-blowing and inspiring. I would defiantly recommended this play to others.”

Mountview Bridge Project

Key Stage 3 Drama club had the amazing opportunity to work with Mountview Academy for Performing Arts on a ten-week project and performed extracts from Carol Churchill's Love and Information in one of Mountview’s performance spaces, to an invited audience.

Easy 3“I really enjoyed taking part in this project and performing in front of people I don’t know. It was scary but lots of fun.” Jelani, Year 8

“I enjoyed learning all the rehearsal techniques we learnt and developing my skills as an actor.” Daniel, Year 8

“Doing this project gave me a real sense of what it must be like to be an actor as we were given only four weeks to learn our lines. It was hard and I never thought I would be able to do it, but I did and the whole experience was great.” Carla, Year 8

Classical Theatre Workshop

Easy 4Year 10 GCSE Drama took part in a workshop with Actors of Dionysus, a theatre company with 26 years' experience of creating bold adaptations of ancient Greek drama and new writing inspired by myth.

The workshop was aimed at supporting students with their practical understanding and learning of Classic texts.

“I really enjoyed this workshop. Actors of Dionysus theatre company really help us to develop a good understanding of Greek theatre and its purpose.” Noellie, Year 10

Harris on Stage

Easy 8This year, Harris Academy Peckham hosted the 3rd annual event of Harris on Stage, where performing arts departments from across the Harris Federation come together, once a year, to celebrate and share the talent of our students.

This year we had a collection of dance pieces, solo singing, musical theatre, contemporary and classical theatre performances.

Our students’ contribution to this event was a performance of extracts from William Shakespeare’s Othello. They were fabulous and demonstrated a true understanding of Shakespeare and his language.

“When Miss told us that we were going to be performing a Shakespeare play I wasn’t sure I could do it. However with Mrs Paraskeva’s help, I was able to develop an understanding of the text, which also meant I was able to give a true performance of my character.” Dayane Year 10

“Iago is my new favourite Shakespeare villain!” Thierno, Year 10
