Black History Month - A Round-Up of What Happened

During the month of October we celebrated Black History Month to infuse black history into our curriculum and expose our students to the rich heritage.

Although our black history acitivites are certainly not limited to a single month of the year, here's a taste of some of the activities that happened in October. The artwork pictured here was created by Temiloluwa, Year 10.

ImageStudent Council

  • A student 'show and tell' gave students the chance to share aspects of their cultural identity (or a culture they are interested in) with the rest of their form.
  • A poster competition gave students the chance to celebrate their culture or one that they are interested in
  • Student Council gave online assemblies to present aspects of LEAP and British Values with ties to black history.

History Department

  • A special Black History Month lesson for Key Stage 3 focused on Mansa Mussa
  • We curated a bibliography of books/posters for further reading
  • We created a paper on black Germans and black Tudors for Key Stage 4 students

English Department

  • We celebrated black British writing through our lessons
  • We held a writing challenge for students which was adapted into a lesson

Music

  • During the month we hightlighted black performers and composers (classical music included)
  • On a few mornings the department also sent around inspiring music to staff, with a black history focus

Learning Resource Centre

  • Displays promoting Black History Month were put up in the entrance area and dining hall
  • A special selection of books on black history was added to the library trolley

Food

  • Miss Snow organised a cooking competition through the student council
  • The student council liaised with Chartwells (our catering supplier) to ensure the school menu represented our school's diverse heritage

Training

  • Free coaching opportunities were offered through BAMED and the Harris Federation

Assembly and Careers

  • Dr. Mandisa Greene, President of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, held a careers meeting with Years 9 and 10 via zoom
  • We organised a series of ongoing LEAP assemblies focused on the themes of black culture.

A massive thank you to all our staff for their wide and varied contributions to the celebration of black excellence and black history.
