Black History Month trip to V & A Museum

On 12th October five students from Harris Academy at Peckham took part in a workshop entitled “Tell it like it is – Uncomfortable Truths” at the V & A museum. The students were initially taken on a trail around the museum, exploring various objects that showed the legacy of the slave trade. The students then had a question and answer session facilitated by the Anti Slavery organisation, in the V & A newly constructed lecture theatre, where we discussed the difference between chattel slavery and modern day slavery in UK and around the world. We completed the day by designing sugar packets with a difference - which highlighted contributions made by enslaved Africans and influential figures from past to present day. A lot was learnt and students expressed they had enjoyed the day.

“It was fun and we got to learn about black history!” said Meiteene Toan 8AMk
