Business & Enterprise Faculty
Aims of the Faculty
The Faculty fully endorses the whole school aims and aspires to:
- offer each student the opportunity to study in an interesting, orderly and challenging environment;
- prepare each lesson thoroughly and in line with schemes of work and the relevant exam board specifications;
- mark and assess student work carefully and consistently, and to provide guidance and feedback on individual student progress;
- encourage each student to consistently seek to achieve their own best possible standards;
- inspire students to develop interest and enthusiasm in the world of business and enterprise;
- to develop Business and Enterprise as one of the Academy’s specialisms throughout the whole school.
The achievement of these aims is to be observed through:
- helping to develop lively and enquiring minds; the application to task; and, the ability to listen and discuss logically;
- well balanced lessons which add to students’ knowledge and understanding, and develop competence in key skills;
- written and verbal feedback; students correct and re-draft written work; a details record of every student’s work is kept by the class teacher and shared with their parent/carer;
- analysis of Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 results, and other certificates awarded.
Structure of the Faculty
The Faculty is the fastest growing Faculty in the Academy due to the popularity of our courses in the 6th Form and our specialist status.
Mr Beeton is the Curriculum Co-ordinator. Five teachers in the Faculty will be teaching BTEC Business First Certificate, Diploma and National (Mr Beeton, Mr Jessop, Mr Walsh, Ms Smith and Mr Matin) . All staff are qualified and experienced teachers in the areas that they will be teaching, and bring a wealth of experience into the Academy.
The day-to-day running of the Faculty is the responsibility of the Curriculum Coordinator.
Accommodation
The teaching of these courses is all situated in K and H blocks. Depending on class sizes these rooms may vary and all a classes lessons may not be in the same room.
The Curriculum Coordinator’s office is located on the ground floor of K block and Faculty resources are kept there.
All teaching rooms have an interactive whiteboard, cupboards and display areas. Nearly all rooms have extensive ICT equipment. The H and K block rooms have Intel-desks and are shared with the ICT Faculty.
Key Stage 4/5
First Certificate
Students will study Unit 1 Exploring Business Purposes, Unit 5 People in Organisations, and Unit 9 Exploring Business Enterprise.
All these Units are assessed through assignments (one for each Unit). Students will be given close guidance and support to complete these assignments to specified deadlines. It is vital that these deadlines are met as this is an important part of any business – the ability to deliver tasks on time. Students failing to meet these deadlines cannot be guaranteed to pass their course.
However, all students should note that under no circumstances must they copy their work from books, the internet, or other students’ work. This will result in the students failing their assessment. Staff have a responsibility to bring any copying to the exam board’s attention, and this could result in you being barred from taking any exam in years 11, 12 or 13.
Students will receive a Distinction, Merit, Pass or Fail grade in each Unit. The course is worth the equivalent of 2 GCSE passes – 3 Distinctions will get you two A* grades, 3 Merits gets you 2 B grades, and 3 Passes gets you 2 C grades. If you do not pass all three units you will get 2 U grades.
First Diploma
Students will study Unit 1 Exploring Business Purposes, Unit 2 Developing Customer Relations, Unit 3 Investigating Financial Control, Unit 5 People in Organisations, Unit 8 Doing Business Online, and Unit 9 Exploring Business Enterprise.
All these Units are assessed through assignments – at least one for each Unit. Students will be given close guidance and support to complete these assignments. It is vital that these deadlines are met as this is an important part of any business – the ability to deliver tasks on time. Students failing to meet these deadlines cannot be guaranteed to pass their course.

BTEC National
Students will study, in their first year, Unit 1 Exploring Business Activity, Unit 2 Investigating Business Resources, Unit 3 Introduction to Marketing, Unit 4 Effective People, Communication and Information, Unit 5 Introduction to Accounting, and Unit 10 An Introduction to Market Research.
Students will then take a further six units in their second year.
All these Units are assessed through assignments – at least one for each Unit. Students will be given close guidance and support to complete these assignments.
