Religious Education Faculty

Religious Education is studied by the majority of pupils in this school years 7 – 11. It is a vital part of the basic curriculum that provides a foundation which permeates other National curriculum subjects.  These include: Art, English, Geography, History Technology and It also reflects in parts, aspects of environment, citizenship and PSHE.  According to the current school timetabling, RE is allocated 5% curriculum time.  This amounts to 60 minutes (one period) for each class at KS3.

Key Stage 3

Pupils in Y7 study the following topics:
Messengers: an introduction to major leaders of the Faith-Siddharta Guatama, Jesus Christ, Muhammad, Moses, Guru Nanak and Marcus Garvey.
Then Birth Ceremonies and Family life. These are taught through the Christian, Islamic, Jewish and Sikh Faith.

Pupils in Yr 8 study the following topics:
Growing up, Worship and Festivals each of these topics are taught through the Christian, Islamic, Jewish, and the Sikh Faith.

Pupils in Yr 9
study the following topics:
The Environment, Animal Rights, Marriage, Divorce, Family life, Abortion, Racism Sexism, and Pressure Groups. These are studied with the context of the Islamic and Christian Faith.

Also some of our students in Yr 9 have started the new GSCE RE course covering Christianity and Islam. This course enables them to do the GCSE RE course in three years covering four units. Each unit will be assessed by a one hour examination.

 


Key Stage 4

Pupils who choose to continue studying RE at KS$4 will simply continue with where they ended their studies in Year 9 and work on those units which are outstanding. The content of the course covers;  Family & community, Worship and Holy books in both the Christian and Islamic faith.
