17 April 2024Year 9 Cardiff Hip Hop Trip During Easter HolidaysDuring the Easter break Year 9 were invited to Cardiff to participate in a series of hip hop based workshops and watch a live theatre performance at the Cardiff Millenium Centre. This trip was offered to the students due to the amazing performance piece they created whilst participating in the Mountview Youth Showcase which took place at the end of the first term this year. What students said... "Loved it! I wish we had the chance to stay longer." Kaite, Year 9 "It was actually good being in Wales. We got to do lots of different activities." 9 April 2024Young South London Jockey Gets a Taste of his DreamRead about HAP student Kai and his experience at the Riding A Dream Academy, as it appears in the The Voice. "At first it was nerve-racking because a racehorse is more keen and powerful," said Kai. 2 April 2024Key Stage 3 Enjoy Horniman VisitSelected KS3 EAL students visited the Horniman Museum in March. Students were thrilled to see colourful butterflies flying around the Butterfly House and were trying very hard to get a photo of the 'Blue Morpho' species which has bright blue wings. They were also fascinated with the displays such as the clothes that the Inuit people wear in the cold, the scary metal torture 'suit' and the Year 9 students were able to relate their History lesson on Myanmar to the displays as well. The slight cool weather and drizzle did not stop the walk around the beautiful gardens. On our way into the flower garden, Daniel, one of our newest EAL students said "Miss, a bunch of flowers" and he was 'spot on! This was the collective noun that we had been studying the past week. We got to see everything that we expected to see except the illusive 'seahorse' at the aquarium. Students now have a challenge to produce a piece of art from a chosen item from the museum which they had taken photos of. We can't wait to see the entries after Easter and prizes, which are souvenirs from the Horniman Museum Shop will be given to the best three entries. Ms Liew, EAL Teacher

31 March 2024That Peckham Boy – Kenny Imafidon Meets HAP students“I look forward to the future” was the feedback of one Year 10 student after author and entrepreneur Kenny Imafidon discussed his book That Peckham Boy with book blogger John Paul Kunrunmi during a visit to Harris Academy Peckham. Growing up in Peckham, Kenny led a double life in his teens: a successful student by day and cannabis dealer at night. On his 18th birthday he was arrested for a crime he didn’t commit. After six months in prison, he was determined to make something of his life. After completing his studies and securing prestigious internships and work experience placements he managed to be awarded an Amos bursary to study law. He is now running a successful research agency focussing on under-represented groups. “I wrote the book to show people that regardless of where you come from or what your circumstances are, you can be who you want to be," he told students. Year 10 students felt very encouraged. Kenny Imafidon clearly excels in every LEAP category: Leadership, Enquiry, Aspiration, Perseverance and is giving back to the community. 27 March 2024Year 10 Perform in Music ShowcaseIn March, members of the Year 10 GCSE Music class took part in their first GCSE Showcase. As 30% of the GCSE course is performance, this event gives students the opportunity to perform in public for the first time. They performed solo or ensemble pieces in a smaller space to a supportive audience in preparation for performing on the Academy's main stage to a much larger audience at our main Winter Concert or Songfest performances. Students performed a wide range of songs from Billie Eilish and The Greatest Showman to Adele and Whitney Houston. Ms Enderby, Subject Lead Music The first GCSE Music showcase for Year 10.

20 March 2024STEM Kart Grand PrixThe theme of this year's British Science Week was Time. The main activity for our students at Harris Academy Peckham was the STEM Kart. This project is run by Big Bang Promotions and gives students the opportunity to experience driving electric go-karts. We selected 30 students from each KS3 year group to take part in the activities. Spectators were as excited as the participants. Students were taken through theory sessions and then given the opportunity to drive. The classroom sessions taught them about ergonomics and aerodynamics in car design. One student commented: "It's important to consider the proportions of the human body when designing a car." An inflatable track was set up in the sports hall and students took turns driving the go-karts, recording the time it took to complete the circuit. "The go-karts are quite fast and we even drifted," said another student. The track was nothing like Silverstone, but the excitement on their faces was as good as any F1 race. Cars of the future As the karts were electric, this was an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of clean energy and what the cars of the future might look like. The students were also able to see the link between STEM and new technologies as the world of engineering continues to evolve. After the ride, the students were challenged to design their own go-karts using all the knowledge they had gained. When asked about their experience, one student concluded: "I love it so much I want to do it during half term." We hope that this project will spark an interest in engineering or mechanics in our students. 19 March 2024New Partnership with Trinity Laban ConservatoireThe Academy is very fortunate this year to be involved in the first project between the Trinity Laban Strings Department and local schools. Trinity Laban is one of the UK's leading conservatoires, training the next generation of professional musicians. In November we were lucky enough to be the first school on the Trinity Strings schools tour. Students from Trinity came to give a performance to all our KS3 violinists on the MISST programme, with some of our students joining them for a performance of Gorecki's Suite in an Olden Style. Since then, Trinity students have come on a weekly basis to support our Academy Orchestra rehearsals. This final project enabled four of our Year 10 violinists to perform again with the Trinity Strings Orchestra and students from other south London schools in a concert at St Alfege's Church, Greenwich. 18 March 2024Year 10 Visit Fitzwilliam College CambridgeOur Year 10 Harris Experience students visited Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge University, on 14th March. As part of the day, the students received a presentation on life at the university, participated in a debating session, engaged in a tour of Fitzwilliam College, had lunch in the college’s impressive dining hall and attended a Q&A session with current Cambridge students. Alimat and Esther won the debate on the topic of 'Why alternative medicines should not be banned' and received a special shoutout from the jury. The students learnt so much and thoroughly enjoyed their time at Cambridge university.
