Exploring Art at the Royal Academy

Exploring Art at the Royal Academy

Mayfair and the Royal Academy of Arts was the destination for our year 10 GCSE art students.

Students visited this historic gallery space to extend and expand their knowledge and critical thinking in response to the work of the renowned artist Kerry James Marshallan internationally acclaimed artist and one of the most important painters working right now.

His powerful paintings place the lives of Black Americans front and centre. Born in Alabama during the civil rights movement, his art celebrates black identity and everyday life showing people, places and stories that deserve to be seen.

The students were encouraged to choose one work of art that they felt a connection with which they sketched and made notes about. Back in the classroom the students will develop a final piece inspired by Marshall’s themes.

What students said...

The students were great ambassadors for the Academy with members of the general public commended them on their good behaviour. Here's what they said:

  • "I like this piece of work because I can see a connection with the other works."
  • "I like the stories behind the pictures."
  • "I like the art, the paintings."
  • "I loved it!"
  • "It was fun!"

Well done year 10s!
