Author Stephen Kelman's Inspiring Writing Workshop
Year 10 and 11 students took part in an engaging and thought‑provoking creative writing workshop this month, led by acclaimed author Stephen Kelman, best known for his award‑winning novel Pigeon English.
The workshop offered students a unique opportunity to hear firsthand from a published author about the writing process, the power of voice, and the importance of storytelling. Kelman spoke openly about his journey as a writer, where he finds inspiration, and how real‑world experiences can be transformed into compelling fiction.
During the session, students explored key themes from Pigeon English, including perspective, character development and social issues, helping to deepen their understanding of the novel while also encouraging them to think critically about the world around them. Kelman shared practical advice on crafting believable characters and finding an authentic writing voice, motivating students to develop confidence in their own creative abilities.
The workshop was highly interactive, with students taking part in short writing activities designed to spark imagination and creativity.
Many students were particularly inspired by Kelman’s discussion of how everyday observations can become powerful stories.
Events like this continue to support the Academy’s commitment to enriching the curriculum and providing students with memorable learning experiences beyond the classroom. The visit from Stephen Kelman was a valuable opportunity for Year 10 and 11 students to connect literature to real‑world creativity and see the possibilities that come with a passion for writing.
