Harris Academy Peckham Drama Club Celebrates Windrush Day

Harris Academy Peckham Drama Club Celebrates Windrush Day

On Monday 22nd June, students from the Harris Academy Peckham Drama Club were proud to take part in the Windrush Day Carnival at Harris Primary Academy Peckham.

The students performed an original drama piece entitled "We Came, We Built, We Belong", which explored the experiences, contributions and legacy of the Windrush Generation.

Through a combination of physical theatre, choral speaking, monologues and ensemble performance, students told the powerful story of those who travelled from the Caribbean to Britain in 1948 and the challenges and successes they experienced in building new lives.

Windrush (1)

The performance highlighted key moments in Windrush history, including the journey aboard the Empire Windrush, the difficulties faced upon arrival in Britain, the invaluable contributions made to public services such as the NHS and public transport, the importance of family and culture, and the impact of the Windrush Scandal. The piece concluded with a celebration of the lasting legacy of the Windrush Generation and their significant role in shaping modern Britain.

The students demonstrated commitment throughout the rehearsal process and delivered a thoughtful and moving performance to an audience of parents, staff and pupils.

The performance formed part of a wider Windrush Day celebration, which included performances from pupils across all year groups, a carnival parade and community festivities. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to reflect on the importance of diversity, cultural heritage and belonging.

We are incredibly proud of all the students involved and would like to thank them for their hard work and dedication in helping to bring this important story to life.
