Alumni News - Marvellous Afamefune's Story

My name is Marvellous Afamefune and I am proud to be a former student of Harris Academy Peckham, where I spent five memorable years that helped shape the person I am today.

I moved to the UK from Nigeria at the age of 10 and attended Oliver Goldsmith Primary School before joining Harris Academy Peckham. As a young girl adapting to a new country and environment, HAP quickly became a place where I grew in confidence, ambition and character.

During my time at Harris Academy Peckham, I studied Geography, French, Music and Drama at GCSE, achieving grades ranging from A* to B. I also made lifelong friendships and was encouraged to challenge myself both academically and personally.

Some of my favourite memories came through music. Thanks to the support of teachers such as Ms Paraskeva and Ms Rogers, I had the opportunity to travel to Wales for choir performances and even sing at Westminster Abbey for members of the Royal Family — experiences I will never forget.

I was fortunate to be surrounded by passionate and supportive teachers who genuinely cared about their students. In particular, my ICT teacher, Mr Okubule, was always encouraging and willing to help, leaving a lasting impression on me.

For sixth form, I began my studies at Harris Academy Peckham, where I studied Biology, Chemistry and Psychology at A-Level. Although the sixth form later closed and I transferred to Harris Boys’ and Girls’ Sixth Form to complete my studies, the strong foundation I received at HAP prepared me well for the future.

I recently graduated from Middlesex University with a BSc in Children’s Nursing, achieving a 2:1 degree classification, and I now work as a Paediatric Staff Nurse caring for children and their families.

Looking back, Harris Academy Peckham played a significant role in my journey and gave me the confidence, support and opportunities to pursue my ambitions. I will always be grateful for the experiences, friendships and teachers who helped me become the person and professional I am today.
