Support With Homework

Homework plays an important role in helping children become independent learners and build good study habits that will benefit them throughout life.

This page explains how we set homework, why it matters, and how you can support your child at home. If you have any queries about homework please do let us know and we'll be happy to help you.

Why is home learning important?

At Harris Academy Peckham, all teachers design their curriculum with home learning as a key tool to help students retain essential knowledge and develop effective metacognitive skills. We do this because, as the Education Endowment Foundation notes, “the evidence shows that the impact of homework, on average, is five months’ additional progress.”

With your continued support and students’ regular completion of home learning, we know our young people will become increasingly independent and lifelong learners, confident in their ability to acquire and apply knowledge throughout their educational journey and beyond.

How can you support your child?

You can support your child by:

  • Checking they have received and completed their home learning each day. All students are given a planner to support with this.
  • Checking your child’s completion of Home Learning on their Microsoft Teams account.
  • Checking that your child has completed their Bedrock/SPARXMaths homework (see below).

We will also support children to complete their homework.

  • Our library is open for students at break and lunch every day where students can access computers.
  • Rewards will be given for regular completion of home learning.
  • Detentions will be given for incomplete home learning.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s completion of home learning, please do not hesitate to contact us at enquiries@harrispeckham.org.uk

What does home learning look like?

Homework 1

Foundation Subjects – These are all non-core subjects, such as History, French, Music etc.

Year 10-11

Students will receive home learning a minimum of once a week in each subject.

Homework 2

For further guidance on home learning in our core subjects, please see below.

Science

To support your child's science learning at home, all students are to use the online platform www.Kerboodle.comStudents are expected to complete all assigned home learning tasks.

This resource provides interactive activities, digital textbooks, worksheets, video, and assessments aligned with our curriculum.

To access Kerboodle, students should log in using the username and password provided to them. The institution code wrj9 will be required during the first login. If your child encounters any issues with their account, please contact their science teacher for assistance.

Maths

Students use Sparx Maths to complete their weekly mathematics homework, they were introduced to the platform during a lesson and have been provided with a homework book.

Students log in at https://sparxmaths.com > Log in > Student login.

Students created their own passwords, if they have forgotten, they can use the ‘Forgotten Sparx login details?’ button and reset by entering their name and date of birth.

Our top tips for you and your child when using Sparx Maths:

Sparx will send you weekly email updates on the completion of homework.

  • Encourage them to tackle it on their own – helping them to build independence and to think hard about their maths work, make sure they are not using AI platforms to do the work for them.
  • Check their work! If students log in, you can see the percentage of work completed on the homepage. Also, please check they are using their homework book (you should see the date they have done their homework each week and work underneath it)
  • Nudge them to use the support videos – these are alongside each question to provide tailored support
  • Suggest that they start early - to give plenty of time for help if they need it. There is a guide with further information for parents.

English

Students in Years 7 to 10 use Bedrock to complete their weekly English homework. Students must achieve at least 30 points per week. The Bedrock online platform allows students to earn up to 20 points at a time, so all students must log in to Bedrock at least twice per week in order to ensure that this target is met. This ‘little and often’ approach is a cornerstone of revision guidance, and is an approach that we aim to embed in all students.

At Key Stage 4, home learning is revision-focused and takes the form of a range of the following tasks:

Short tasks (5-10 minutes)

Medium tasks (20-30 minutes)

Longer tasks (45-60 minutes)

  1. Revise the flashcards you have made (you can only do this task after you have made the flashcards!)
  2. Recap the meanings of each Power and Conflict poem
  3. Revise your sentence starters for English language
  4. Plan a response to Paper 1 Question 5 (creative writing)
  1. Create 3x flashcards
  2. Plan a response to Macbeth or A Christmas Carol question (based on an extract)
  3. Plan a response to a Pigeon English or a poetry question
  1. Write up an essay for Macbeth or a Christmas Carol
  2. Write up an essay for Pigeon English or Poetry
  3. Write a creative writing piece
  4. Complete a Section A of a Language Paper.

You can support your child in the following ways:

  • Writing down their Bedrock login details somewhere accessible. If your child is unaware of their Bedrock login details, please email U.Kohnen-Zuelzer@harrispeckham.org.uk.
  • Reminding your child to complete Bedrock regularly, and checking on their weekly points total before Monday night, after which the points total resets.
  • Reading with your child for 15 minutes per evening.
  • If your child is in Year 11, quizzing them using flashcards they have made.
