Mayfair and the Royal Academy of Arts was the destination for our year 10 GCSE art students.

Students visited this historic gallery space to extend and expand their knowledge and critical thinking in response to the work of the renowned artist Kerry James Marshall.

Kerry James Marshall is an internationally acclaimed artist and one of the most important painters working right now.

His powerful paintings place the lives of Black Americans front and centre. Born in Alabama during the civil rights movement his art celebrates black identity and everyday life showing people, places and stories that deserve to be seen.

The students were encouraged to choose one work of art that they felt a connection with which they sketched and made notes about. Back in the classroom the students will develop a final piece inspired by Marshall’s themes.

The students were great ambassadors for the Academy with members of the general public commended them on their good behaviour.
