Wellbeing Sessions To Try At Home

To stay fit and healthy, we recommend you do one PE or yoga activity every day, and one cooking activity each week. On this page you will find a range of activities that you can do at home.

You can also download our HAP thoughts, tips and ideas for wellbeing during lockdown.

Stay connected

An easy way to increase your wellbeing is to connect with other people. Why not phone, message or video call another member of your family who is not living with you, particularly those that might be lonely during isolation. Or message or video call your friends to maintain social connections while your cannot meet.

You might want to check your neighbours are OK each day too, particularly those that might be lonely. These small acts of kindness will be appreciated and will make you feel good as well.

PE With Joe

Joe Wicks, The Body Coach, has a 30 minute PE session every Monday-Friday for students of all ages. "The schools are closed, there is no PE, but don't worry I'm going to take this over," says Joe. "I am going to be the nation's PE teacher!"

Yoga With Adriene

Adriene is an online Yoga teacher with 6.5 million followers. Adriene has posted 100s of online Yoga videos that you can do in the comfort of your own home. The one below is ideal for complete beginners and lasts 20 minutes.  A perfect way to warm down after PE with Joe or to start the day. If you are a complete beginner, try this video 4-5 times to get the hang of it before you explore her other videos. Enjoy!

Cooking with Jamie Oliver and Family

Jamie Oliver, champion of healthy eating in schools, has a whole YouTube channel of recipes to choose from. The video below is the first in a series of 15 videos of simple recipes that children can prepare and cook themselves (with supervision of course!).

Jamie has also released a five-part series (Jamie: Keep Cooking and Carry On) with recipes that can be made with everyday ingredients that you should still be able to buy in the shops – this was on Channel 4 this week and you can still watch it now. You can also find the recipes here. Why not try a new recipe every week!

Super Yummy Kitchen

Our catering supplier, Chartwells, have started a YouTube Channel, The Super Yummy Kitchen, featuring chef Andrew Walker and guest chef Allegra McEvedy cooking exciting healthy snacks, in addition to curriculum activities for children. Head over to their YouTube channel to take a look.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness has been shown to be a very effective way to reduce stress and anxiety.  There are lots of companies that are currently offering free access to their normally paid-for smartphone apps (e.g. Calm and Headspace) so you might want to give them a go.

However, on YouTube there are many mindfulness activities that you can try. The video below is one of a series of nine different 10-minute sessions. Why not try a session once a day?  You might find it easier to start off trying one session and doing it every day for a week before you move on to a different session.

Remember, to start with you will probably find yourself quite distracted (even if you manage to find a quiet place to do mindfulness in your home). This is normal! When you catch yourself thinking about something other than the session, don’t get annoyed at yourself, just stop thinking/worrying/planning about what you were and return your attention to the session.

Good luck with your practice!
