16 July 2025Outstanding In Every Category ‘Transformational’ Education at Harris Academy Peckham Praised in Fantastic Ofsted Report The community at Harris Academy Peckham are celebrating a superb Ofsted outcome this week which saw the school judged outstanding in all areas by inspectors. This outcome is a marked improvement on the ‘Good’ judgement which the Academy received in 2019. Students at the school are said to achieve “very strong outcomes” as a result of the support and academic provision on offer at the Academy. Throughout the report, inspectors highlighted the “transformational” education which students receive thanks to the “highly ambitious” curriculum and “expert” teaching staff. Students’ attitudes to learning were also praised, with behaviour described as “excellent” both inside and outside the classroom. The Academy’s “exemplary” approach to ensuring students’ personal development was another focal point of the report. For example, the inspectors noted the positive impact of the Academy’s extensive range of extracurricular activities and programmes such as life coaching and mentoring. These initiatives are said to “broaden pupils’ horizons and inspire them to think ambitiously about their futures”. Further preparing them for life beyond the Academy, the inspectors observed the “strong” careers provision on offer, which sees students hear from a range of employers and further education providers who visit the school. Leaders at the Academy are described by inspectors as “highly ambitious for the school and the role it plays in their local community”. Inspectors emphasised that, while the Academy is set in a community with high levels of disadvantage, school leaders are determined that this does not hold their students back. Claudette Bergin, Principal of Harris Academy Peckham, said: “I am so proud of our fantastic students and staff whose continued hard work and dedication has led to this brilliant outcome. It is particularly pleasing that the inspectors saw the impact of our focus on personal development and how ambitious we are for our students to achieve their very best. 10 July 2025Library Legends: The Power of Student LibrariansStudent librarians play a vital role in keeping our school library organised, welcoming, and vibrant. Student librarians are responsible for a wide range of activities, including shelving and organising books, checking books in and out, maintaining displays and assisting students with finding resources. They help keep the library neat and accessible, ensuring materials are in the right place. Donte, Year 7 (pictured below), has been an absolute star this year, keeping shelves tidy and available for everyone. Beyond the basics, student librarians often take part in promoting reading through book recommendations, organising reading challenges, and helping with events like visits from primary school students. Their involvement encourages a culture of literacy and curiosity throughout the school. Their engagement also builds valuable skills. “I enjoy helping other students find what they’re looking for,” says Arsalan, Year 7 (pictured below). Volunteering in the library teaches responsibility, time management, and communication - all skills that benefit students far beyond the library walls. Our wonderful student librarians are essential to the heart of our school library.

10 July 2025Students Impress at South London’s Largest Arts CentreThe first ever Harris Federation Festival of Music happened at Fairfield Halls on 9th July 2025. Our students performed as part of the massed Harris in Harmony Choir, Federation Concert Orchestra and our phenomenal KS4 Jazz Band – who came second in the Federation Battle of the Bands competition, impressing the audience with a slick, tight performance of A Night in Tunisia. Despite a sell-out audience, including Sir Dan Moynihan and Secondary Director Rebecca Hickey, not to mention representatives from Sony Music and ABRSM, our students performed with no fear - simply with sheer joy and a love of music that exuded from them. As a small academy, our students stood out for their enthusiasm and musicality, and demonstrated the excellence in music that they are known for, reflected in the fact that we have since received several phone calls and emails about just how phenomenal our student musicians are. The rapturous applause from the audience at the end of the performance was a well-deserved celebration of the time and effort that they put into their music.

23 May 2025Learning and Leaping: Year 11s Take Studies Outdoors on PGL TripI’ve never seen so much excitement at 6am. Suitcases rolled and students trekked through the Academy doors to aboard coaches to our much-awaited destination: PGL Marchants Hill! Seats selected and playlists poised, we set off in anticipation. The plan was agreed: half of the group would revise much needed GCSE subjects in the mornings, whilst the other half would participate in high energy, outdoor activities- then everyone would swap in the afternoons. Stepping off, we all set to work with glee- it was hard not to, whilst being surrounded with such greenery and high ropes! Thrill seekers were in their element, climbing the trapeze and Jacob’s Ladder, whilst squeals of “Get me down!” via Ayman, were enough to elicit roars of laughter- the perfect tonic for such a crucial, crunch time of GCSE studies. Communal food and games time were enjoyed just as much. The vast salad bar was much appreciated by all, whilst the hot food options were devoured by the plateful. Miss Evans’ ‘Knowledge Gladiators’ on the field was a personal highlight: here we really observed the hard work that all of year 11 had put into their studies; eagerly completing knowledge quizzes on various subject areas. Team games came after and once the sun began to set, it was time to head inside and get acquainted with the dormitories. Showers, unpacking and a little bit of downtime before lights were off and we were all able to rest….. or so we thought. A midnight fire alarm was most unexpected but being the brilliant group they were, everyone settled quickly and thoughts of the following day, sent us to dreamland. What a fantastic experience!
