3 October 2025Open Evening at Harris Academy Peckham!Last night Harris Academy Peckham opened the doors to prospective year 7 students and their families. Our brilliant school has so much to offer, and we had the helping hands of many of our students to show exactly what makes us so special. Student tour guides were available to guide families around the school and give their own perspective on school life. There were also wonderful members of staff accompanying them to provide that extra bit of information. The true highlights of the evening were what laid within the classrooms. For example, parents and students were quizzed on their maths knowledge by our brilliant maths students, who were happy to offer great guidance if you got a little stuck. The science lab also did not disappoint! Harris Academy Peckham’s buddying scientists had a variety of experiments on show, with each student willing to explain how it all works. The English department was a great place to discuss all things literature and see some of the work that current students have been doing in class. This visit was brilliantly followed by a dramatic performance of a scene from ‘Naughts and Crosses’, highlighting the array of talent within our school. Our Principal, Claudette Bergin, led a talk in the hall to showcase the Harris Academy Peckham’s academic successes and highlight how special and tailored the school is to each student. If you missed us yesterday, do not worry! We have Open Mornings from 9:00am to 10:00am on: · Tuesday 7th October · Wednesday 8th October If neither of these dates suit or if you need any assistance with the applicaton process please email admissions@harrispeckham.org.uk We look forward to welcoming you and sharing our wonderful school!
2 October 2025Year 9 Explore the Life of George A. Roberts During Black History MonthAs part of their study of the varied experiences of soldiers and civilians in World War One, Year 9 students have been learning about the extraordinary life of George A. Roberts—a Black British soldier who served with distinction in the Middlesex Regiment during the Great War. Roberts, originally from Trinidad, volunteered to fight for Britain and became one of the first Black soldiers to serve on the Western Front. After the war, he settled near Peckham, where he became a respected community leader and firefighter during the Blitz. His story offers a powerful lens through which students have explored themes of bravery, identity, and the impact of racism both during and after the war. Students responded to Roberts’ story with curiosity and empathy, engaging in thoughtful discussions and reflective writing. Many were especially struck by his connection to their local area, and considered how his legacy challenges traditional narratives of World War One while deepening our understanding of Britain’s multicultural history. Here’s what some of our students had to say: “I didn’t realise Black soldiers like George Roberts played such an important role in World War One. Knowing he lived near Peckham makes it feel even more real and important.” – Gloria, Year 9 “Learning about Roberts made me feel proud about local men fighting in WW1. I didn’t know people from the Caribbean volunteered to fight for Britain like that—and that one of them lived just down the road from us.” – Harry, Year 9 “It was powerful to read about how brave he was. I think more people in our area should know about him.” – Isaac, Year 9 This learning forms part of our wider Black History Month celebrations, helping students to appreciate the rich and diverse histories that have shaped Britain. Year 9 have shown real maturity and insight in their reflections, and their work continues to highlight the importance of inclusive history in the classroom. To learn more about George A. Roberts and his legacy, visit Black History Month UK’s profile on George A. Roberts.
22 September 2025Welcome to Our Year 7s!The exciting start to a new school year at Harris Academy Peckham. Harris Academy Peckham have officially welcomed our new cohort of Year 7s. Now that they are all starting to settle in the to the secondary school lifestyle. Harris Academy Peckham take extra measures to ensure students have a wonderful experience making the move from year 6 to year 7. The transition days during the summer term, gave students the opportunity to visit the school with their parents. This meant they could get a feel for the school and what is to come, before the term had even started! ‘All the teachers and students are really nice.’ - Rio We then provided an additional transition day at the start of term for our Year 7 students. Often the main worry is that new students will get lost and make no friends. Therefore, we focus on easing these anxieties on the very first day, so that they can have a comfortable and confident start to the year. On this first day, students were assigned to their tutor group and met their new tutor. Tutor time is the perfect way for them to familiarise themselves with a specific member of staff and begin to meet their peers. The tutors also made it clear who students can speak to if there have any worries or concerns and outlined the Designated Safeguarding Team. ‘The older students are really lovely and will help you find your class.’ - Annabelle Throughout the day, Year 7s were taken for a tour around the school and shown where their lessons would take place. Alongside this we outlined Harris Academy Peckham’s expectations of them, such as the uniform policy and what to expect in lessons. Approaching the logistical aspects like these are so important in making their transition easier. At Harris Academy Peckham, we have a set of shared values (Leadership, Enquiry, Aspiration and Perseverance) that shape all aspects of student and community life. These values are what we teach Year 7 from day one and hope they apply to all their academic and personal endeavours. ‘You can learn lots of new things!’ - Frederick The best part of Year 7 transition day was the teambuilding exercises and icebreakers that the students did during form time. With activities such as the ‘Name Game’, Year 7s were laughing and making friends in no time. Friendships are the key to settling in, so we created relaxed environments for the students to make those bonds. Moving forward with the rest of the academic year, Harris Academy Peckham offer a wide range of amazing enrichment clubs and school trips. We hope that Year 7s push themselves out of their comfort zones and utilise all that the school has to offer. For example, we have an incredible Music Scholarship Programme available to our Year 7s! Anyone can participate and we will prove them with a free instrument and music tuition, with the opportunity to perform at one of the music concerts throughout the year. ‘I really want to learn to play the violin this year.’ - Rio We look forward to seeing everything our new Year 7s have to offer over their exciting career at Harris Academy Peckham!
